Today has been another sad and lonesome day
as if in a song by Hank Williams but so are all
the days since my brother left for eternity and
he too once dwelled in a place called lonely town
where everybody seems to be a rank stranger in
in their corporation tees and martinis stirred not
shaken but we are all temporary like Achilles me
wonderin where are my contemporaries and what
became of the angel from Montgomery where my
soldiers at whose got my back like JayZ doin 55
in a 54 with ninety nine problems or was that
bottles of beer on the wall or Miss Mary Mack
making an improbable comeback with them
buttons she becomes a silhouette as she walks
on by like the girl from Ipanema or the one in
that song from Venerio out of your sight into
the night as if in a dream for real not fade away
love is love only at heaven’s gate while we are
left absolutely like martyrs on the road scorned
by chanting crowds of fair-weather friends who
hide their faces and snicker while fearing they
may be the next to go for the bell will one day
toll for you discarded like yesterdays’ news read
all about it even cowgirls get the blues like pink
flamingoes or some sidewalk grrls playing double
dutch up in the Bronx pictures at eleven and maybe
one day we’ll meet again in heaven where no one
will be a rank stranger to me but for now I feel like
sitting here composing another lonesome day blues
