As Mercury settles in between
the Sun and Big Blue outrage
runs down the face of the silvery
Moon screaming of jealousy
or quicksilver fleeting or lost
love then all hell broke loose
like Burroughs naked lunch
brownstone served up on a
melting spoon fed to a tripping
cow across the Milky Way from
sea to shining sea looking for
a place to land in the valley
of the shadow of death where
the poet said abandon all hope
as the black Madonna appears
in the image of a preying cat
casting an evil eye and many
other sorrows as temptation
mounts in a purgatorial state
or merely suspended animation
far short of paradise further on
up the road where martyrs sing
look at me look at me so self
righteously in piety, self pity,
bad poetry and all that jazz in
a minor key and this is a new
Psalm number twenty and three
for charlatans and demagogues
who whisper sweet nothings falsely
while bowing to craven idols until
the man came back down from the
mountain with the covenant in tow
in time for every season and every
purpose under heaven verily while
Gabriel the archest of angels calls
the tune all new Mercury blues
