Summer Verse in Ragtime

The moon in splendid harmony with Venus
heading out to the sunken ghettoes of mind
tripping out on reveries in syncopated rhythms
of modified Sousa marches a ragged number
like Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag from Jelly Roll’s
right hand sliding on the keys in ¾ time in some
cathouse in New Orleans and it’s summertime too
and all is moving like molasses dripping outta dem
trees whispering minuets by Mozart or some other
bird song in dose lazee crazee hazee days before
we were swinging on purple haze take me back
and shake it sugaree on a freight train of eternity
in all sincerity like Jay-Z so necessary throwin down
beats and busted rhymes past his black album prime
and once upon a time it was spelled out down in the
groove now all the white noise leaves us only one
thing to do roll away the dew from our eyes in the
nick of time to catch a glimpse of the Moon on its
way back and Venus and Mars are all right tonight
